“Sure, we love to see the summer sunshine!
However, as the mercury rises, many homes begin to accumulate heat. Sometimes it gets to the point where home owners feel like they’re roasting in an oven. So here are some simple tips to help keep you cool this summer.”

1) Shade: If your home faces East, West or South it is vital to draw the shades and close the windows during the heat of the day. Alternatively, hang tightly woven screens or bamboo shades outside the window during the summer to stop 60 to 80 percent of the sun’s heat from getting to the windows. When buying your home factor in the value of window awnings, outdoor shrubbery and large trees.

2) Moving Air: Moving air within your home adds comfort, so try opening windows in the cooler part of the day and use a blower or ceiling fan to keep air circulating. If possible, also run the bathroom exhaust fan (ideally via a de-humistat). If you have an attic or skylight hatch, open it to allow the hot air to rise and escape.

3) Reduce Heat-Generating Activities: Limit activities such as indoor cooking, clothes drying and dishwashing.

4) Insulate: Ensure that your home is properly insulated so that temperatures inside will stay more even in both summer and winter.
This includes insulating your walls, installing double-pane windows and sealing all potential air leaks.

5) Air Condition: If excessive heat seems to be a serious problem for your home, invest in a high-efficiency air conditioner to make the summer more bearable.

Happy Summer!
